Holiday Accommodation

Meningie property for HomestayIn their spare time, between making Stone Rollers, Ki Ki Engineering owners Mary and Laurens Verhees, built Pelican Perch Retreat for their retirement.

Working and living in their family’s Ki Ki business next to the busy Dukes Highway, Mary and Laurens built their dream home, as they could afford it, while romanticising about retiring peacefully on the shores of Lake Albert in beautiful Meningie, South Australia.

With plans to create a special space for their aging father, Mary and Laurens had great plans for both Meningie and Dad, who unfortunately passed as the final brick was laid.

“Initially, we had no intention of moving or building anywhere for our retirement and we definitely had not given any thought of going into the Holiday Rental business, not until a great offer came along to buy two blocks right on the banks of Lake Albert – and it was only recently that a neighbor planted the seed about The Bend Motorsport Park and Holiday Rental,” Mary said.

With his father retiring in the late 80’s, Laurens and his brother Theo, formed a partnership to take over Ki Ki Engineering – known as the home of the Stone Roller.

“We’ve made thousands and thousands of Stone Rollers over the years, we even sent a few to Saudi Arabia and Fiji, but now is our time to finally put up our feet and enjoy the fruits of our labors,” Mary said. “I love my life, walking around the lake and chatting with our interesting guests about all the wonderful places they can visit while in the Coorong – and we’re so lucky to have so many great facilities in Meningie, shops, restaurants, medical facilities, a golf course and of course, the cherished and revered, Lake Albert.”

Mary and Laurens have no plans of changing anything about their life, but would love to share what they have at Pelican Perch Retreat – for bookings visit Coorong Realty on or phone 8572 4555.

“Our Holiday Rental is close to everything, very private and peaceful – and we don’t have plans to change or do anything else.”
